The idea for DoGoodBuyUs came about the same way every great story starts, at the supermarket with my son. I picked up two boxes of cereal, one was a name brand and the other was a Paul Newman's Own. I looked at the ingredients in the name brand and saw there were over 90 but I had only heard of 4. Surely this wouldn't be good enough for my son to eat. Fake sugars, things I couldn't pronounce... I then looked at the Paul Newman's Own and found 4 ingredients, all of which I recognized. This was it! Finally, I had found something that was GOOD for us AND did GOOD for others at the same time.
We believe consumerism can change the world, so we built the largest marketplace of goods that Do Good. From everyday items to gifts, everything is made for a cause. At present we work with 100's of social ventures and nonprofits, helping them sell the products they (and now we) have created.
Our impact is inherent in the organizations we work with. Over 80% of which are nonprofits themselves. It is also built into the guidelines of who we will work with. Every organization who wishes to join DoGoodBuyUs must give back with every transaction. That could mean a % of sales or hours of volunteering, etc.
Our greatest impact comes from supporting the amazing efforts of others. For the second straight year, donations are expected to drop by 3% (or over $7 billion). This means when we need organizations on the ground the most, they are receiving less and less support. The mission of DoGoodBuyUs is allows consumers to support them by doing what they would be doing anyway. Could be buying soaps or cosmetics or yoga bags. Every purchase gives a majority share back to the organization helping to change the world.
Success for us is when the sustainability for some of the worlds most impactful organizations is supported by the endless amounts of consumer spending. In January of 2013, eMarketer found that 56% of online shoppers had search for gifts that give in the last 12 months. That is up for 18% the year before. The tide is turning and with, the potential to much of what ails the world.
As a bootstrapped startup since our founding in August of 2011, an award of $50,000 could make a tremendous difference in our day-to-day operations. Our belief is that education is the key to success and creates empowerment for a lifetime. With the money we would hope to achieve a level of sustainability, driven by doing GOOD. It will also allows us to bolster efforts in advertising and events that support our partners work. Ultimately, our goal is to give $1,000,000 back to our partners by the end of 2014.
