idea by microforwards

Applicant Name

First and Last Name:

Sherine Fernando

Website

:

http://www.giversleague.org/

What inspired your idea?

:

During my bank days I was burdened with the injustice the poor faced simply because they could not prove their credit worthiness. Many were deprived of financial help despite the great potential they had to succeed in their humble business ventures.Even if they were approved extremely high interest rates were charged to cover anticipated risks; this happens in the microfinance sector too because they cover the risk for default loans by charging very high interest rates from the good payers. Banks don't do that. Injustice only for the poor. After much research/brain storming I found a solution.

What’s your social impact business idea?

:

Its an affordable finance product called ‘Micro Forwards’ (MFs) which the poor can make use of for their humble business start ups, expansions or vocational training costs leading to guaranteed employment
Purpose -is to help the deprived poor become self reliant, provide for their families, and also enable them to give forward to help other deserving people in their own communities
Features -Receivers become Givers themselves by giving in 24 mthly installments the principal amount received. Such ‘give backs’ are pooled to fund new MFs to be given forward to others in their same communities. Recipients also got to put the MF to best use and make a reasonable profit. They are also expected to remain as Givers of whatever tiny amount possible even after they give back the full principal

What is your impact and how is it relevant to the business?

:

The project is a revolutionary one expected to make a huge impact and it is already recognized by the deserving poor as an affordable financing tool which they can accept without any fear of defaulting.
Whoever we have contacted so far to have cell partnerships all like this concept as according to them there are so many financially handicapped people unable to borrow because of the extremely high interest rates quoted to them locally. Most poor people want to build their own communities as it is in their long term interest to have better living conditions.
I am so confident that this program will catch up and spread faster across the world like no other had done before.

How will you establish sustainable impact in the locations you wish to serve?

:

There is a powerful forward moving action in this system of giving because every dollar given is returned and given forward. The continuity is possible because the receivers themselves become givers by giving forward from their productivity. Further, the benefits to their community through this continuous giving action is well explained to them, and it is only on their agreement to be actively involved in this program qualifies them to be recipients of micro forwards. They are also strongly encouraged and motivated to continue giving just a $1.00 or $2.00 even after they fully finish giving back the micro forward amount they received
There is continuation for every seed nothing is wasted

What does success look like, including measurements and reporting on the business and your impact?

:

The ever increasing number of success stories is a good measurement of success. We will be keeping statistics of the following numbers for our own records and for donor information which are all success measuring scenarios
1. Number of countries reached
2. Number of cells formed in each country
3. Number of families who benefited and became self reliant
4. Number of new jobs created
5. Number of children of the families who succeeded
6. The percentage of successful give backs (the success rate versus defaults) – currently we have a 100% success rate, we strive not exceed the default rate above 2% when our exposure is at very high levels even.
7. Country-wise numbers of all the above

What would $50,000 mean for your business? And how will it help your company better reach its goals?

:

$50,000 will help us to fund 100 to 150 micro forwards. Our micro forward requests usually range from $250 - $500 per each application. We were receiving around 15 applications per week and we had to request our cells to slow down because we did not like the applicants to wait expectantly for their money when we were finding it difficult to fund all at such a fast rate especially because we had started this organization not very long ago.
Within a few months of operation, we have made great success, and we would have continued at a faster rate if we had more funding in place. Therefore $50,000 will be a great blessing that we can put into best use as we have many pending applications

This is an excellent idea to help the poor, as it gets them involved in the process of helping others and makes them feel worthy. There is always a better chance for success if you have "skin in the game." Good luck, Sherine.

Yes, micro forwards gives the opportunity for the poor to feel valuable and useful in their neighborhoods. Instead of them being looked down as borrowers incurring high risk, they are recognized as givers capable of uplifting their own communities. Judging from the success rate so far, I am quite confident of a steady growth, and I do have ‘skin in the game’. Thank you for your kind positive thoughts. / Sherine

Traditional micro finance lending is a common practice across the developing world. Many supporters of traditional micro finance argue that repaying small loans encourages poor people to develop the entrepreneurial ethic and business savvy necessary to support small or home-based enterprises. These are indeed important skills and support from small loans can be a helpful route out of poverty for many in the developing world.

However, poor communities do not develop through the circulation of money alone. Giver's League International asks recipients to cultivate an additional awareness of their place and responsibility to their families, friends, colleagues and neighbors. Micro forwards are a novel and ambitious alternative to traditional microfinance lending; giving recipients the choice to pay their loan forward to someone else in need through giving time, training, knowledge, support or even their own products to support the work of others.

This encourages recipients to think in broader terms about improving their communities. Trust, social responsibility, fellowship and a culture of mutual assistance - apart from monetary investment - form the critical foundations for sustaining stable, safe and strong communities. I ask that you join Sherine in supporting these efforts. A little can go a long way!

Thank you for highlighting the broader characteristics of the micro forward concept that awakens a community into cooperative thinking paving the way for stronger and more stable communities. I would also like to emphasize the fact that the absence of the interest burden, makes it not only affordable to give back, but increases the recipients’ net income levels as well, which in turn elevates the wealth of the whole community. / Sherine

This idea is a very new concept in which the unfortunate can benefit from the very inception with out the burden of having to paid interest which can reduce their start up profits.
It also a blessing to them as they pursue their own goal of becoming self sufficient they can also impact
the lives of others, who they can identify with, as they begin to make their repayments - and also provide some kind of employment down the line for others.

I think this Mrs. Fernando has done excellently in following her heart's desire to bring such new conception (micro forwards) hereby, bringing great relief to the less fortunate re interest charges and simultaneously assisting them to give back to society what they have received.

by Darwin345

Thank you. I am happy that you have grasped the concept well. Having to pay an interest charge that is very much higher than the normal rates is indeed a heavy burden for poor entrepreneurs to bear. Instead, letting them carry a responsibility to be givers themselves in order to impact others’ lives is something they would cheerfully do to see their own communities benefit. You are right, finding a solution for these unfairly treated poor entrepreneurs was a heart’s desire that I had for a while, and it led to my finding this unique concept which I named as Micro Forwards. / Sherine

To create an opportunity to give forward is genius. I see this so much more beneficial than loans or grants. I trust there is a spiritual training component as well. The networking with already existing groups present seems to insure the feedback relationship. Mrs Fernando, I applaud you!

by emery.smith

Thank you for taking time to understand the real value of this unique concept. Under normal circumstances we can never consider the poor to be ‘givers’. It’s always the rich or the ‘Haves’ who are expected to give to the ‘Have Nots’. But just imagine how awesome the system would be if ALL begin to give ! Therefore, where the ‘Have Nots’ are concerned, instead of doing neither of the two extremes (loans or grants) which burden them with heavy debts or give them finances for free, why not strike a balance between the two and make them participants of an affordable giving forward mechanism. This is what Micro Forwards achieved – it created an opportunity for the ‘Have Nots’ to become givers too. Yes, the feedback we get from our cells abroad and the ‘giving forwards’ that have already started coming prove that this concept is a great success ! / Sherine

Any Micro Finance Institutions on average charges very high interest rate – they say monthly 3% but yearly this comes to 36% !!!! Do these schemes actually help the poor or put them in cycle/trap of poverty/debt???
The organization, Beyond Good Intentions, is committed to uncovering innovative and effective approaches to international aid worldwide and has recently made a documentary in order to catalyze a much-needed dialogue about aid effectiveness. This film reports that many micro-lending organizations charge 35-55% interest on their loan each year. Franca Chilengue, a farmer and Kiva Loan, remarks on his experience:
“The interest rate is the problem because it’s steep. We end up paying a lot of money. I am not educated, so I don’t understand much about interest rates. I asked others and they explained to me what it is and how it works…that is where I realized that it’s steep. It’s helping, but it’s not enough.”

This is why GIVERS LEAGUE IS THE SOLUTION – INTEREST FREE LOANS !! THE BORROWER NEVER EVER WILL BE IN DEBT AS HE IS CONSIDERED A GIVER FROM THE INSTANCE HE STARTS PAYING BACK – A REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT – HERE THE BORROWER HAS MORE RIGHTS AS HE IS CONSIDERED A GIVER IN GIVERS LEAGUE ! THIS IS THE SOLUTION FOR THE POOR TO FREE THEM FROM THE CYCLE OF DEBT AND FROM THE HOAX OF MICRO CREDIT THAT DISGUISES IN HIGH INTEREST RATES PULLING PEOPLE INTO ETERNAL POVERTY!!

Thank you for your well researched comment. The background information you have gathered quoting also a poor borrower’s own words hits the nail on the head ! It is because my research work too brought me to the same conclusion that I came up with this new MICRO FORWARDS concept. You are right, GIVERS LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL is indeed THE solution. I rest my case. / Sherine

Givers League International is deeply committed to helping improve the lives of men and women who struggle and work hard every day, but sadly find themselves strapped and limited by the harsh realities of poverty. These people don’t need and don’t ask for a hand-out, but they do appreciate and gladly welcome a hand-up. That outstretched hand is what GLI offers through its MicroForward program. This type of thoughtful, responsible assistance not only affirms the dignity and worth of every individual, but it lifts up an entire community with a pay-it-forward model that yields greater results by benefiting many others in need.

Thanks for your motivating comment about this program’s growth. You are right, judging from the success rate of this operation during the last few months since we started, it is already showing signs of a rapid growth. The response from the micro forward recipients is indeed amazing ! Almost all of them who have received our micro forwards so far, have started giving back from the first month onwards without even making use of the 3 months grace period allowed. They are so relieved as the micro forward is such an affordable finance product to them compared to the traditional micro loan that makes them more indebted burdening them emotionally as well. Our cells report that our product is getting very popular and the word is spreading fast in their communities, and more and more are eager to comply with the very simple requirements and enjoy its benefits. / Sherine

What a great concept ! The recipients  are not only learning to be accountable for what they receive, but are becoming aware of the need to help each other build their own communities by 'Giving Forward' !!  This project deserves to receive the very best of donations and grants so that more and more financially struggling entrepreneurs living in depressing conditions could be given the chance to use their initiative, talents and skills to pursue their humble business ventures.  This program will spread worldwide faster than any other micro business assistance program.  I fully support and applaud this unique concept that makes lasting differences in poor people's lives, one family at a time leading to the transformation of villages and whole communities.

This is an exceptional humanitarian project, financing micro businesses of poor people without making them borrowers/debtors! Instead, making them givers/donors and also members of ‘Givers League’.

Basically this organization is changing the habit of borrowing to giving.

Any loan/credit system makes people live from tomorrow’s money and therefore they are forever indebted in some way or other. It looks like Givers League International will gradually change this dangerous culture/pattern at least by starting from the poor man setting that example first.

Since the micro forward recipients after giving back what they received continue to be GIVERS of whatever they can give, this process enables the organization’s fund base to strengthen and expand. This is when the system becomes sustainable.

I fully endorse this revolutionary giving mechanism, and wish GLI every success !!

This unique project deserves the attention and support of all rational thinkers of the world because of the following reasons
1. Any small scale financially handicapped entrepreneur with little or no credit has a fighting chance of obtaining an interest-free loan to improve his lot. I dare say that a very large number of people belong to this class.
2. If they succeed, their community benefits in many ways. Not only through poverty reduction, but via improved physical and mental health. By 'domino effect', villages, cities and countries would become better places to live in or visit... affecting the whole "Global Village".
3. Extension of the 'Habit of Giving' in cash or kind inherent in this project to the rest of the world would be a dream-come-true for most of us who yearn to see a less selfish world.
Don't you think Sherine's idea deserves the best you can offer?

Thank you, Liz. I, myself was shocked when I was doing research on micro loans to realize how high the interest rates are on micro loans that are available to the poor. When high interest rates are definitely a heavy burden on even the bigger businessmen, how could these poor entrepreneurs bear that? Yet, some of the poor businessmen opt to take such loans as there was no other better finance facility for them. When our micro forwards program gradually penetrates into impoverished communities, there definitely will be a revolutionary change seen - the borrowing concept will fade away and a cheerful forward giving concept will take over !! How wonderful to create loans that are available to anyone, regardless of credit! You mentioned that you have 100% success rate, thus far. If I might ask, how much money was initially distributed in those loans? How many loans have you made? What is the net worth of your loans today? How would $50K sustain the rate of demand in your market? (each person donates back $1 or $2 a month after the loan is paid off. You expect to finance up to 150 loans with the 50K. So in two years, you will receive roughly $150 -$300 a month in donations from these additional loans. So your rate of financing would be about 1 loan every 1 or 2 months. You currently have 15 applications a week.) Does your organization charge interest? or penalize late payments, etc.?

by nicole.wdisf
about 1 year ago | Reply

Nicole, you seem to have not understood the concept at all. We do not create loans or give loans; so there is no necessity to check the receiver’s credit worthiness. We call our product micro forwards, and it is not available to just anyone as you have mentioned. It is a unique affordable product available to the financially handicapped poor entrepreneurs who are unable to afford the heavy interest loaded micro loans. There is no interest component at all in our product as it’s not loans that we give. The receiver is not considered a borrower either. They become givers themselves giving back cheerfully to help others in their own communities. It is obvious that this $50K is not enough to sustain the demand for our micro forwards in the long run. However, it will be a great blessing for this initial kick off stage of our organization, and it is also for this same reason that GOOD Maker has so kindly come up with this competition to help start-ups like ours to move on to the next level. Even the way you have calculated the rate of financing is incorrect since you seem to have not understood how this operation really works. I am sorry I cannot make this reply any longer and would suggest that you visit our website. Thank you, Sherine F.
