The Specifics

Calling all dreamers and world-changers: Do you have an amazing idea that has the potential to transform lives? GOOD and Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS and the Start Something That Matters Foundation, have teamed up to help budding social entrepreneurs like you launch an idea with the power to change the world for good. We know that when it comes to bringing a dream to life, it can take a lot more than passion and a brilliant idea: you need a little financial support too. We’re proud to announce the Start Something That Matters Challenge, which will award $50,000 to help one enterprising individual launch his or her plan for driving social impact.

If you’re a passionate, dedicated individual with a genius idea to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges, we want to hear from you. Submit to the Start Something That Matters Challenge for a chance to win help from GOOD and Blake to launch an innovative solution that can drive the world forward.

Submissions are open from April 22 to May 17, noon Pacific Time. The chosen idea will be selected based on its potential for driving positive impact, its ability to be realized, and its viability for ongoing success to fuel positive change.

Connect with this challenge on Twitter @GOODmkr, Facebook and GOOD

HI! I was wondering, are judge approvals on a rolling basis or will everyone who's been accepted be notified all at once?

Thank you for your time!

Thank you SSTM and GOOD for this awesome opportunity. I have one concern however; when voting ends on June 12th, I will be commercial fishing in Alaska where correspondence can be a bit difficult. I was unable to locate the terms of correspondence for signing the grant agreement, and was wondering if I personally would have to do so, and how long one would have to reply and sign the grant agreement once the winner is announced. I would appreciate any clarification on the issue, and if needed, would not hesitate to leave the stinky fishing job behind to accept a prize if I were so fortunate. Thank you all again!

Hello, I submitted the application for my idea yesterday. I submitted a photo, but want to know if I can change it to a video? The video was not done in time for the deadline, but we should have it ready in the next few days. Am I able to change the visual representation? Perhaps before it goes to vote if it gets that far? Thank you :)

Darn! I discovered this past noon today or I would have immediately applied. I have a great youth media program with under-served teens that desperately needs funding to kick it off. Maybe next time How do I get on your email list?

Mission Statement artiste peintre kristy kilpatrick
GWTW artiste peintre kristy kilpatrick is dedicated to promote global unity and environmental stewardship through art by creating oil works of our world and universe that convey oneness of all peoples and interdependence of all God’s creations. From December 2008 to April 2011 Gone With The Wind Studio, Historic Central Market, York PA artiste peintre kristy kilpatrick main focus was to instill the premise of greater social value of art. The charitable gifting of oil works for recognition of the dedication of Church and State Leaders whom serve the greater good was to be the ground work to inspire the young and old alike with a greater sense of community. As the artist’s philosophical focus transitions from individual persons and things to global concepts of peace and stewardship, the artist’s work transitions to depictions of universal acceptance. Now with GWTW Studio on facebook , her focus is to paint the positives of various cultures/religions, to promote better understanding and respect among various peoples, and to mitigate prejudicial fear and hostility between differing perspectives. Her oil works reflect her current mind set of appreciation of beauty and respect for life, honoring the soul by refraining from capturing this essence to the canvas. Gone With the Wind artiste peintre works are signed in Arabic Calligraphy & most often Titre in French. In her perfect world, hearts are changed to see that life is most precious, people share their blessings with those less fortunate, and all live in harmony with each other and the environment.

What if I am shy and not comfortable posting a utube video but think I have a good idea or how do you keep your idea your own if it's posted on utube?

by sloander

Hi Sloander! We will not post your idea on YouTube. By submitting to the challenge, you are opening yourself up to the possibility that your idea is selected for public voting, much in the same way as any crowdfunding site. It is entirely up to you if you'd like to submit to this challenge and share your ideas with the GOOD community.

What stage can the venture be in? If we have been going for a few years but still consider ourselves a start-up, do we qualify? We starting building our idea in 2009 but started scaling in 2011. Thanks!

Hi smartgiving, as we noted to another commenter below, the laws and regulations of various countries make it difficult for us to offer this contest globally. We really wish we could accept submissions from across the globe, but currently at this time we are unable to. We hope to offer global contests in the future, so please keep checking back.

Can an individual who has come up with an idea, and then formed a partnership in order to realize this idea, enter the contest? It seems like this is fine, since it states in the official rules, "...that Participant has either created or would like to create, individually or with others, in order to drive social impact..." I just wanted to double-check! Thank you!

I would use some of the money to help grandparents during the winter. A lot of grandparents fall and hurt them selves on ice or slippery snow. I would ask people to volunteer to go grocery shopping or to the pharmacy or drive them to the community center. i would also like to do a senior citizen exchange where the help children with reading or homework. Also. start a community garden with organic seeds , so when people in the community were running low on food, they could just come to the garden. maybe have a place where everyone can help out , and put a cupboard with tea in case the need to weed on a frosty day.

Can you submit more than one idea?

by jesswaters.producer
12 months ago | Reply

Hi there, only one submission is accepted per person. Thanks for your interest!

by Emilyshana
12 months ago | Reply

Why only only the US?! discrimination reached here and its supporting the idea that change can come (only) from certain places/nationalities. I'm sorry but I'm very disappointed, I was thrilled when I saw the promo video, but I felt I got a slap on the face when I saw that condition to apply.

Well, maybe I should start thinking about an idea to support equal opportunities online, specially that Internet removed all these physical boundaries .... But they still exist in our head!

Why do we need to submit a photo or video? I know all about the Photo Op, though a grand idea does not need a visual feed to be sold. My grand idea involves People Working With People to Serve the Humane Needs of People in this Country, through Education, Business and Social means.
